Bob Kelsey Investigates: ‘Neck on the Line’ Set to Celebrate Free Comic Book Day

So as tomorrow is Free Comic Day (waits for cheers and applause to die down) and it’s a great day for us comic folk and now finally we here at Unseen Shadows thought we would throw our hat into the ring. To coincide with Free Comics Day we will be releasing the first ‘Bob Kelsey Investigates’ story ‘Neck on the Line‘. The story is written by Virgil Yendell with art by James Evans.

For those of you who don’t know Bob Kelsey is a reporter on the run from a centuries old cult he made the mistake of falling foul of. Unable to keep his reporter’s nose for a story out of other people’s business he now runs an underground blog investigating the weird, the strange and the downright surreal. If you remember the old show ‘Kolchak: Night Stalker‘ starring Darren McGavin, which was a heavy influence on the creation for the X-files TV show, then lets just say Kelsey and Kolchak would get along just fine. In this first adventure we see Bob relaxing after his latest case and relating his tale to anyone who will listen. The story is only two pages long and you don’t need to have read the Fallen Heroes novel or any of the spin off material to enjoy this fun short story.

We are currently already working on two more Bob Kelsey Investigates tales so watch this space for more news and look out for the comic tomorrow. In the meantime here’s panel to give you a taste of what to expect.

Blood Cries Out Page 14: First Look at the Reverend

So in case you thought the team working on Blood Cries Out have been sitting on their thumbs doing nothing I thought I’d drop by to shatter that illusion. The problem is the pages after our last preview are pretty spoiler heavy (but boy are they stunning) so we wanted to wait to get to a spot where we could give you something to look at which wouldn’t spoil the story. To that end here, for your viewing pleasure, is not only our first look at the Reverend but also a nice big hint of which Fallen Heroes alumni will be sharing some panel time with our holy weapon of god.

Hopefully we’ll be able to show off this panel in full colour courtesy of Gat soon but I’m sure you agree that Cy,Nic and Steve have done some stunning work on this page. If you’ve not checked out the Blood Cries Out preview then here’s the link to the PDF.

‘Bob Kelsey Investigates: Neck on the Line’ Free to Read and Coming Soon

Bob Kelsey is an everyman in a world populated with monsters and heroes. To survive in those hunting grounds takes the self-preservation instincts of a feral rat. That’s what Bob Kelsey is to me.” – Cy Dethan.

Bob Kelsey,  the reporter who seems to always end up on the wrong side of the supernatural was given his first outing by Cy Dethan in The Immaculate Abortion of Dina Leigh. Cy took someone who I had originally written as a minor character and expanded his role, revealing what the character was up to following the events of the novel. Reading the final script and the eventual comic I realised that there was a great opportunity to tell some short solo stories with the character and so the idea of Bob Kelsey Investigates was born. The short stories (1 – 6 pages in length ) will be standalone, either in colour or black and white and most important of all will be completely free to read on the Unseen Shadows website .

The story first out of the gate will be a two pager called Neck on the Line by Unseen Shadows newcomers Virgil Yendell and James Evans (Artist/Letterer) in  which Bob recounts his latest supernatural misadventure over a drink or three. The script is already complete and James is currently hard at work on the art. To get your appetite whetted here’s a look some character sketches from the story.

Kathryn Monroe Sketch from Historia

Been a little while since we’ve had some updates on the Unseen Shadows website but that is about to change as we have a load of news to tell you. Look out for more posts this week but to begin with we give a long overdue welcome to writer Lizzie Boyle who joins the Unseen Shadows world.

Some of you may already know Lizzie from her work over at  Disconnected Press. After reading Fallen Novels Lizzie came at me with a fantastic idea for a story on Kathryn Monroe, who we saw recently solving a high profile murder in Historia. In this new story ‘The Heart Which Makes Us‘ we get to see a younger and less disciplined Kathryn tackling her first big case. In many ways this almost feels like ‘Monroe Begins’ as a lot of the groundwork in the story sets up who Kathryn will will become. The story also gives us the first appearance in a Unseen Shadows title of fellow Torch Operative Luther Washington. Those of you who have read the novel will know how much of a big role Luther’s plays so it’s great to see him making his first appearance outside of Fallen Heroes.

The script is now finished (and yes it is all kinds of awesome) and Lizzie and I are currently on the hunt for an artist to take on the story. More news as we have it.
